Why I Enjoy Snorkeling After Catching Some Waves

After I chase and jump off with some waves, the next thing I do is look for the calmer part of the beach and take my snorkel and fins. The chaos of the waves makes me take my best snorkel gear and head for some serene places underwater. There are reasons for doing that, and mostly because I want calmer activities after the ranging waves get the better of me.

Top Reasons Why I Love Snorkeling

The calming effect of snorkeling is just one of the many reasons why I do it. Although it’s the one that stands out of my list, there are a few others. I’m listing them down below. How about you?   1. It’s cheap—I’m one of the more practical people who walk this earth and how much I would spend on something is important to me. With snorkeling, although there are more expensive gear out there, you can just start with shoe string budget. As you go along, you can slowly change your gear to more expensive ones and enjoy the better features that it has.
  2. It’s safe—Contrary to popular belief, snorkeling is a safe sport. Due to the kind of gear that you’re using, you’re actually limited to the depths that you can go to. Unlike scuba that allows you to go to the deeper parts, snorkeling is limited to your lung capacity. Of course, you should take safety precautions and never dive without a buddy, but other than that, it is really safe.
  3. It’s fun and relaxing—Do I need to elaborate further? Of course, snorkeling is pure fun. The life underwater just never ceases to amaze me. Have you seen Finding Nemo? Well, it’s way better than that in reality.
  4. You always find something new—Even with my years of snorkeling experience, there is always something new that I find every time I dive. The life underwater is just so dynamic, you won’t know what you will find on your next dive. There’s just too many things out there. A new fish, a new coral formation, you name it. If you want adventure, snorkeling is the way to go.
  5. It’s good for you—Swimming is a good cardio exercise and when snorkeling, you’re just not aware that you’ve already swim a mile. The exercise part of snorkeling is not a struggle because it’s part of the fun itself. You’re not exercising for the sake of it, you’re exercising because it’s part of the activity that you love.

Do a proper warm up before every surf session

To prevent excessive muscle soreness, do some limbering up before you get in the water. This will loosen up your muscles for the strenuous activity ahead. This will help prevent injuries and keep you fresh for the next day’s surfing.

Core strength

Your core should receive plenty of attention as it controls most of your muscles and will aid your balance. Core training can be easily done without any equipment. Those being the front plank and indo press-up. The more advanced techniques will require the use of exercise equipment like medicine balls or Swiss balls.

Upper body

Without good upper body strength, you’ll never be able to paddle enough for those bigger waves. In surfing, you use your arms for just about everything, paddling against walls of white water, paddling into waves and then the strength to push yourself up on the board. Dumbbell training is great for this along with any other weight lifting.

Lower body

You’ll need good lower body strength if you hope to hold your balance, make big turns and hold out on those longer waves. Exercises for lower body don’t require much equipment. Start with squats and lunges. You can then move on to balance boards.

Swim training

Swimming should never be left out of your exercise routine. It will not only build your confidence in the water but also train all the muscle groups mentioned above. If you’re short on time for training then perhaps you can skimp on other exercises but you must swim regularly.

Aerobic training

While not as good as swimming, you should still incorporate some aerobic exercises into your routine like running and cycling. This will condition your heart and lungs giving you more breath and building endurance.
